Strategy matters as much as yardage
Carlton Oaks is a genuinely difficult Perry Dye design with water, bunkers, demanding angles, and long championship tees. Its current-condition reporting is mixed, so evaluate the layout appeal separately from the latest maintenance signal before booking.
The Links at Lakehouse is shorter than the longest championship courses but still asks for strategic golf: its varied par mix, tough targets, and turf characteristics can make it play longer than the scorecard suggests.
Pick the right kind of test
Choose South at Torrey for championship scale, Barona for strategy and resort-style golf, Carlton Oaks for Dye architecture with current-condition caveats, and Lakehouse for a more compact strategic round.
