Admiral Baker's South Course is one of two layouts at the Navy's San Diego River facility, which welcomes the public as guests while giving military-affiliated players earlier booking priority. How Admiral Baker South Course plays

Longer, more substantial layout with more elevation and wind exposure, larger greens, strategic bunkering and enough width to remain fair from appropriate tees. Moderate-hard; fair from the correct tees. Generally more generous than South; current 2026 reports describe healthy fairways and good lies when conditions are strong.

Bentgrass. Audubon Society Nature Preserve along the San Diego River. Good / moderately demanding.

What to know before you play

Booking Guidance

South is the better fit for nine-hole or time-limited golf

The Navy supports nine-hole play, and South's shorter, flatter routing makes it the more practical Baker option for golfers who want a lower-commitment round or an easier walk.

Recent reports favor North for condition consistency

Fresh August 2026 North reports described healthy green fairways and good tees despite prolonged heat. South's 2026 reports were more variable, with stronger spring conditions and weaker fairway coverage later in the season.

Practice & Amenities

A strong public-access practice setup

The shared complex includes a 20-station full-length driving range, a 150-yard practice hole, bunker and pitching areas, two putting greens, plus PGA instruction and clinics.

What to Know Before You Play

North is the stronger test; South is more approachable

North is longer, hillier and more demanding, and is the course locals more often recommend for the stronger golf test. South is shorter, flatter and better suited to beginners, higher handicaps and easier walking.

Civilians can play, but military golfers book earlier

Admiral Baker is Navy-operated but open to general-public guests without an ordinary golf sponsor. Military-affiliated golfers can currently book 10 days ahead versus 6 days for the general public, so prime civilian inventory may already be limited when the public window opens.

Expect a busy facility, especially on North

Admiral Baker is a high-use facility, and recent North rounds have ranged from roughly four to five hours. South has generally been closer to the low-to-mid four-hour range, but neither course should be presented with a guaranteed completion time.
